Spirit’s Edge Shamonial Temple Beltane Altar from last year’s ritual & salon

The Spirit’s Edge Shamonial Temple will have its in-person Beltane Ritual & Salon on Saturday night, April 30. All are welcome to attend! It is 6:30 p.m. at The Ethical Society. Just join the public Beltane event page as “going” or email to sign up! For those who are not able to participate with us in-person, we are sharing this online Beltane Ritual so that everyone may participate with us!

This online version was written by our Temple’s Secretary Lindsey Piech. Lindsey is also Teaching Assistant in our Spirit’s Edge Mystery School and is herself about to graduate from Witchcraft, Shamanism & Magick III as a student in the Spirit’s Edge Mystery School. While this online ritual is a greatly pared down version of our in-person ritual, it is powerful in its own right and will connect you with the greater working of our Temple on Saturday night.

About Beltane:

It is Beltane, a time of fertility, love, inspiration and passion! This fertility festival, traditionally celebrated on May Eve, from sundown to sundown, marks the beginning of the second half of the Celtic year. It is at this time that the Goddess and God unite, creating the Divine Spark of Life. For more information on Beltane and the Sacred Woods, please visit our Spirit’s Edge Shamonial Temple page, Spirit’s Edge: A Seeker’s Salon group page (and our private Beltane event page from there) and/or our public Beltane event page.

Online Beltane Ritual:

You are welcome to perform your ritual at any time, but if you start your working around 8 p.m. Central Standard Time (CST) on Saturday, April 30, you will be working in tandem with our in-person ritual in St. Louis.

What you will need:

  • Images or representations of the Goddess Danu and the God Bel *and* a candle for each (you may print images online if you do not already have representations; you may even use tea lights for their candles), *and*
  • A candle which will represent the Sacred Wood Spirits and also serve as your personal “Bel Fire,” *and*
  • A holey stone for scrying (optional; or you may scry without one) *and*
  • Your journal or something to write on and a pen.

What to do:

Prepare your altar space with your images of the Goddess Danu, the God Bel and your candles, and then prepare yourself and your space according to your preference. You may cast a circle and call the quarters if you would like, but it is not necessary.

Speak from the heart to call Danu into your space, or you may say:

Hail Danu! Cosmic Goddess, Divine Creator!
Primordial Mother and Queen of the Earth!
Goddess of the Land and the Waters of Life!
You who bring abundance and plenty, nourishing the land!
You who birth inspiration and wisdom!
Clearing blockages so my efforts glide easily into fruition,
Bringing the motivation I need to go forth in the direction of my dreams!
Reminding me that the power to achieve anything already resides within me!
I honor you, and welcome you into my circle tonight!
Hail and Welcome!

Light Her candle.

Speak from the heart to call Bel into your space, or you may say:

Hail Bel! The Shining One, God of Fire!
Primordial Father and God of the Sun!
God of flame and the sun’s restorative power.
You who bring purifying light, nourishing and fertilizing Mother Earth!
You who bring health, protection, healing and the power to grow,
Aligning me with the guidance of my own inner light,
Teaching me to let the light of my soul shine,
Reminding me that the power to achieve anything already resides within me!
I honor you, and welcome you into my circle tonight!
Hail and Welcome!

Light His candle.

Invite the Spirits of the Sacred Woods into your circle with this excerpt from the Wiccan Rede:

“Nine woods in the Cauldron go,
Burn them fast and burn them slow.
Birch in the fire goes
To represent what the Lady knows.
Oak in the forest towers with might,
In the fire it brings the God’s insight.
Rowan is a tree of power,
Causing life and magic to flower.
Willows at the waterside stand
Ready to help us to the Summerland.
Hawthorn is burned to purify
And to draw faerie to your eye.
Hazel – the tree of wisdom and learning
Adds its strength to the bright fire burning.
White are the flowers of Apple tree
That brings us fruits of fertility.
Grapes grow upon the vine
Giving us both joy and wine.
Fir does mark the evergreen
To represent immortality seen.
Elder is the Lady’s tree
Burn it not or cursed you’ll be.”

Note: The Wiccan Rede is often credited to Doreen Valiente, who herself if often referred to as the Mother of Modern Witchcraft. We are blessed to have Doreen Valiente as one of our Temple’s Guardians, a member of the Temple of the Twelve Signs supporting the Great Work of our Spirit’s Edge Shamonial Temple on the Inner Planes, one of the Hidden Company and the Mighty Dead of our Tradition.

Light the candle for the Sacred Woods—your personal Bel Fire.

You may wish to meditate with Danu, Bel and the Spirits of the Sacred Woods. What are you passionate about? What inspires you? In the spirit of Beltane, to what do you wish to give life?

Tonight as you celebrate fertility, fire and prosperous abundance, the Goddess and God unite, creating the Divine Spark of Life. In honor of the union between the Goddess and God, tonight you will ignite your own spark, uniting your own passion and inspiration. Here in your space, witnessed by Danu and Bel, and surrounded by the Spirits of the Sacred Woods, you will bring new life to something you desire.

Begin by thinking of your passion and your inspiration…that to which you want to give life. Soften your gaze and gently scry into your Bel Fire. (If you have a holey stone, gaze at the flame through the hole in your stone.) Look for images and pay attention to any impressions you have or messages you receive. Perhaps you will receive messages from Danu or Bel. Perhaps you will receive guidance from one of the Tree Spirits. Take a few minutes to reflect on the messages you receive.

At this time you may choose to speak words of love and gratitude to Danu, Bel and the Sacred Wood Spirits. When you feel you are finished, thank Danu, Bel and the Spirits of the Woods for their presence in your space and wish them farewell. Then close your circle according to your own tradition.

Be sure to journal your experience and to pay close attention to your dreams, synchronicities and omens that you may receive over the next few weeks in answer to your working of this rite.

May blessings come to you and yours with the increasing sun! Blessed Beltane!
