Mabon and Autumn Equinox blessings to all! On Saturday night, September 19, the Spirit’s Edge Shamonial Temple will have its in person Mabon / Autumn Equinox Ritual & Salon. All are welcome to attend! It is 6:30 p.m. at The Ethical Society. Just join the Mabon event page as “going” and/or email email@example.com to sign up.
For those who are not able to participate with us in person, I am sharing this Online Ritual with The Merlin and the Lady in White / the Lady of Avalon, so that everyone may participate with us!
Our Temple’s Mabon Ritual is inspired from my pilgrimage to Wales, and also my pilgrimage to Glastonbury. It is a request of the Merlin to teach of him upon my return from Wales. (You may also see several prior posts on Merlin and Wales on my blog.) It took me longer than expected for this public ritual with Merlin to occur, and he has been quite patient! It is also based on shamanic and Toltec teachings tying into the cave. It is the idea of transformation of self, through facing ones shadow or parasite within the cave, in this case, within the cave of Merlin.
This online ritual is a greatly pared down version of our in-person ritual, yet it is powerful in its own right and will connect you with the greater working of our Temple on Saturday night.
At this time of the Autumn Equinox, as the nights grow longer, we seek an internal change. We seek an alchemical change, embracing the divine within, through our work with the divine without; in this case, working with the spirits of Avalon.
We undertake this journey and seek to emerge from the cave as the Star Above and Star Below, merged and fulfilled in our Heart. We embrace the union of the White Deer and White Stag, and of the Dragons Red and White within our Hearts, though the power of the Great Spirit, the Merlin and his magickal union with the Lady in White, the Lady of Avalon.
Who was Merlin? He was a magician, priest, teacher, Druid and more, who is still available to us as a teacher and guide to us on the inner planes. He was the kingmaker, orchestrating events for King Arthur to ascend to the throne of Camelot. Some believe Merlin was a man, and some believe he was/is an office, with many holding the title of the Merlin through the ages.
His is a tale of magick and sovereignty; a tale of the chalice/grail and the wand/sword; and a tale of the power, love and wisdom behind the throne. It is a story of the Dragons Red and White. It is a story of healing and of transformation.
You are encouraged to post photos of your working to share the love of Mabon and the Autumn Equinox, and of Merlin and the spirits of Avalon, on our Facebook pages. There are three options, and please feel free to post on all! – 1) the Mabon Event Page (which is public), 2) the Spirit’s Edge Shamonial Temple page (which is public, and/or 3) the Spirit’s Edge: A Seeker’s Salon group page (which is private, and to post on it, just ask to join and we will get you added – all are welcome!).
This ritual was written by me and all rights are reserved. It may be used for your personal use only. If you wish to use this or a variation for a group in the future, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org; this ritual may not be published elsewhere without attribution and also not without written permission from me.
You are welcome to commune with the Merlin at any time, but if you would like to perform your working around 8 p.m. Central time on Saturday, Sept. 19, you will be working in tandem with our in-person ritual in St. Louis.
What you need:
- A representation of the Merlin—a photograph, drawing or statue, or other symbol/ magickal correspondence that relates to him (you may print an image from the Internet if you do not have something); and a tealight or candle;
- A representation of the Lady of Avalon / Lady in White (similar to the above), however she speaks to you, or in whatever image that name speaks to you; and a tealight or candle; and
- A candle for the center of your altar, in a cauldron if you have one, but if not, any fire proof container or candle holder will do;
- Black, white and gold are great colors should you choose to have a cloth for your altar or sacred space.
- Of course, feel free to embellish your sacred space with anything that speaks to you of Mabon, Autumn and Avalon!
What to do:
Prepare your altar space with your images of the Merlin and the Lady of Avalon / Lady in White and their candles, on the right and left of your altar, respectively; place a candle in the center of your altar. Then prepare yourself and your space according to your preference. You may cast a circle and call the quarters.
Speak from your heart to call the Merlin into your space or you may say:
Lord Merlin, I call to you
Great Priest and Kingmaker!
Join me now in this circle
This blessed Mabon night.
Light his candle.
Speak from your heart to call the Lady in White into your space or you may say:
Lady in White, I call to you
Great Priestess and Queen!
Join me now in this circle
This blessed Mabon night.
Light her candle.
Call on the power of their union:
Lord Merlin and Lady in White
I call on you to join together this Mabon night.
Join your power here in this circle, in this magick hour.
Gently bring you powers of healing and transformation to this work.
I ask for your communion, for your messages, and to share this love between us.
For the good of all and harm to none, as I will it, so shall it be done.
Light candle in the center of your altar.
Watch the candle flame grow, flicker and move. As you feel their presence grow within your circle, and feel their power merge within your circle, know that you may commune with the Merlin and the Lady in White / the Lady of Avalon. Know that they support you in this work. You may see, feel, hear or know their presence and their messages for you. If you like, you may enter into a meditation or journey to commune with them in that way, perhaps journeying to Merlin’s Cave for deeper contemplation.
As you sit in communion with them on this blessed night, you might ponder and journal…
- What does the Autumn Equinox and Mabon mean to you and for your life as we turn the Wheel of the Year?
- What of the story of Merlin and of Camelot speaks to you of your journey at this time?
- What do you seek to heal and transform within yourself?
- What help do you seek from the Merlin and the Lady in White on your journey of healing and transformation?
You may speak words of love and gratitude to Merlin and the Lady in White / Lady of Avalon and/or spend time in quiet time in meditation. Be aware of any impressions or messages you receive during this time.
When you feel you are finished, thank the Merlin and the Lady in White / Lady of Avalon for their presence in your space and wish them farewell. Then, close your space according to your preference.
Be sure to journal your experience and to pay close attention to your dreams, synchronicities and omens that you may receive over the next few weeks in answer to your working of this rite.
Blessed Mabon! Blessed be!
